The Daily Journey: Believe
We have been talking about the importance of the written word of God in your relationship with him. Another key element in this relationship with God is Faith.
In Genesis (the first book in the Bible) there is a short account about a man who knew God.
“When Enoch had lived 65 years , he became the father of Methuselah. And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” Genesis 5:21-24
Here is a guy who lived so closely in tune with God that God just took him out of the world. God enjoyed being with him so much that he never died. In the same few verses it mentions it twice that Enoch walked with God. Thats alot of emphasis such a little passage. Everywhere the guy went, what ever he was doing he was constantly in God’s presence. God was not just a good moral idea or an idol he had set up for himself. He discovered that the true God was a living, breathing God wanted to interact with him on a daily basis. Now jump forward in the Bible to close to the end of it in Hebrews.
Hebrews 11:1,5, 6 says:
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for… By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
There is so much that Enoch understood that we don’t get. Enoch lived in the time before Noah and the flood that covered the earth. There was no Bible to read. This guy understood the spiritual connection with God and walked in it every where he went. The key that he found when interacting with God who you can’t see is FAITH. We have to believe that he exists, that he cares for us. That as God he rules over the entire earth. There is nothing that goes unnoticed with him.
At the same time he has to be sought out. Again it takes faith. You can only find him if you earnestly seek him. Walking with God is not easy, but it is rewarding. I will be talking more about seeking God out in this journey, but for now the key is faith- being sure of what you hope for and certain of things you do not see. Faith is built overt time where you have a confidence not in your job, or money, or people, or even religious institutions but God. He becomes your source for life. As you walk with him you start to see that all good things in life come from him and he can even take the evil things of life and make them for good. As you believe him and faith starts to open your eye prayer takes on a new dimension.
A friend of mine named Gus told me this week that he was praying as he was driving down the road. He was asking God to take care of his work and to give him more work. He said he formed it as a question and asked God can you do that for me? As he pulled up to a stop light the there on the back of the car directly in front of him was a bumper sticker that had God written on it with the caption underneath saying Yes I can! God answered Gus’s questions quite literally that day. As we seek God Believe him that he does love you and desires to walk with you otherwise he would have never sent his son Jesus into the world to die for you.
