The Daily Journey:  The Spirit

The Holy Spirit is one of the most important keys to our spiritual relationship with God.  Without him actively working in and through you you will not be able to have a health spiritual journey in this life.  But the Spirit coupled with the word of God is able to transform us into strong, fruitful followers of Jesus Christ.

In Genesis chapter two God gives us the story of how Adam the first man was created.  It says that God made is form from the dust of the ground.  And then he breathed into him the breath of life.  The Hebrew word for breath is “Ruach” which means breath, wind or spirit.  In the beginning man was made in the image of God.  We bear his likeness inwardly and outwardly.  The breath or spirit that he placed within us gives us life, the will to live and the freedom to choose our journey we take.  Unfortunately for us we read in Genesis chapter three that in the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived they had one thing that they could not do:  eat of a tree call the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  They where lied to and deceived by satan who told them they would become like God if they would eat.  They ate it and fell under judgment and a curse.  Their disobedience even brought a curse over the whole environment of the earth.  These events all take place in the first three chapters of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.  This is all important for us to understand the Holy Spirit and our need of him.

Under this curse we experience death.  Spiritual death in that we are separated from God, but also mental, emotional and ultimately physical death.  Because death was not around in God’s original creation but introduced later as a consequence for disobedience we can see it is not his will or desire to see us under the curse of death.  This death brings separation from himself and therefore life.  We also see that we need help we can’t rescue ourselves from this situation.

If we jump ahead in God’s word to us we find that God ultimately gave us Jesus his son who took the consequences of our disobedience so that we could have his life with his Father.  Tomorrow we will look at what Jesus says about his life that he offers us and how his Spirit factors into it.  The importance for us is to accept his offer of life and give him control of our lives.  This requires trusting in what Jesus did for us, turning from our old way of life in disobedience to God and committing ourselves to Jesus to follow and obey him.  Jesus said:

“The time has come, he said, the kingdom of Heaven is near.  Repent and believe the good news.” -Gospel of Mark 1:15

The time has come for all of us.  We can start experiencing God’s reign (kingdom) in our lives by seeking him in prayer and obedience.  As we obey his word we experience his kingdom in our lives.  Here we find forgiveness with God from the judgment we inherited in this life from Adam.  We also start experiencing new life from and with God.  Pray asking forgiveness from any past sin or disobedience you have done and receive God’s forgiveness and acceptance through Jesus Christ.  There is a new life he wants for you but you must be ready to give up your old life away from him.
